I simply couldn't put down Catherine Ryan Hyde's Chasing Windmills. It's a terrific "coming of age" story, a wonderful addition to any avid reader's library and definitely for every young adult reader. The main characters, Maria and Sebastian, are so well drawn and believable, and the book is filled with down to earth characters, like people we know or have known--the good and the bad.
The story, told in alternating points of view, Maria's and Sebastian's, allows the reader direct access into their hearts and souls. The West Side Story subtext is also tremendously effective and the urban and desert setting so accurate. If you loved Catherine's previous novels, especially Pay it Forward, Walter's Purple Heart, Becoming Chloe, or even if you're not familiar with her work, this is the book to read. If there were ten stars allowed, I'd add them.
I am a mature adult (older) plus I read a lot. Chasing Windmills is one of my all time favorite books. Honestly, I felt sad when I only had a few pages left because I just didn't want it to end. What a well written, incredible story. When I finished it I went on and ordered Where We Belong and Ask Him Why - also by Catherine Ryan Hyde. I love her writing style. I also read Allie & Bea by her and enjoyed it immensely. Been reading a long time and I can say honestly that she is one of my favorite authors.
By the end of this tale of star-crossed love I had fallen in love with the book, but it didn't grab me as much as Hyde's other novels at the beginning. We find two very different people that meet randomly and find something necessary in the other. The story could easy follow many possible routes and the allusions to Romeo and Juliet and to West Side Story may be blunt, but we keep wondering if they are predictive or merely suggestive. The ending could be exactly what you expect, but then again it could be quite different. I like how Hyde is subtle in her innuendo rather than creating giant glaring forks in the road.
Catherine Ryan Hyde is one of my newest favorite authors...beginning with Allie & Bea. I like that she inspires you to read on, especially in the characters she brings to life. Her stories flow, especially with dialogue between characters. Chasing Windmills was no exception. Chapter division with a major character telling the story provides a different twist and I have become accustomed to, and like. that style. Also, you're just not quite sure how the story will end and that for me...is intriguing. I intend to put more of Hyde's books on my HD Fire. Sue Ann Reisdorph
Chasing Windmills was another of Hyde's character created stories. As unconventional a situation as you can think of is the one in this book. When a woman who has been laid off from her job and is riding the subway all night to cover that fact up from her husband , meets a teenage boy looking for love, the unimaginable story begins. Their journey getting to know each other and the consequences of actions they learn are the biggest central point of the story. Again it is another character driven book from Catherine Hyde's mind of many backgrounds.
This is a compelling story about two young people who find their way to each other, against all odds, then just as quickly, split up - and that's a good thing. I enjoyed reading it very much for the perspective it gave on people who deserve second chances and those people who should be encouraged to stand on their own two feet.
This author, when writing in first person, captures the thoughts, feelings, and personality of her characters. So in this book, the writing at times seemed simplistic--but then the reader is hit with very deep wisdom in the characters words. I often feel jaded and old when the wisdoms are old hat to me. This book gave me a few gems I had not heard before. As someone who has had to work hard at being less introverted and thinking for myself, I very much related to this book. I jumped right in & lived with the characters. Narration was nice, the voices kind of lulled me to sleep. I read most the book. I was into the story and read fast.
My favorite book by C.R.H. was "Take Me With You". I've read a lot off other books by this author...most all excellent... but Chasing Windmills takes a very close second to "Take Me with You".
Catherine is a wonderful author. Need to read more....
