"Mayan ruins in the Yucatán…a secret room in a tomb…age-old skeletons. To anthropologist Gideon Oliver, the renowned Skeleton Detective, the invitation to join the archaeological excavation of Tlaloc promises two months of paradise on earth. That is, until an ancient series of Mayan curses against desecrators of the site is unearthed. When the first one comes to pass (""The bloodsucking kinkajou will come freely among them""), it's taken by all as a practical joke. But by the time the fourth one is apparently consummated (""The one called Xecotcavach will pierce their skulls so that their brains spill onto the earth""), nerves have begun to fray and suspicions and discord to mount. The steamy jungles weigh down upon the band of eccentric anthropologists as one by one the curses continue to materialize. It takes Gideon's special talents for deduction―along with the enigmatic insights of Mexico's one and only Mayan-Indian inspector of the state judicial police―to resolve an ancient riddle and a modern, murderous mystery."

I just finished reading Curses! for the third time and I enjoyed it just as much as the first two. Oh, sure, I know whodunnit now, so the enjoyment is purely in Aaron Elkins' light, charming writing and the likability of his characters. Gideon Oliver, the "bone detective" who always seems to come across ancient bodies to explore, his wife, Julie, who always figures things out before anyone else and Abe, the alter cocker who taught Gabriel everything he knows.
Gideon's on a dig in Mexico, unearthing an ancient Mayan temple that just happens to be cursed. Someone else on the dig seems bent on convincing everyone that the curse is coming true. When bodies start piling up, Gideon and Julie go into action.
I love the Gideon Oliver series. They are everything a mystery should be - inventive, fun, informative - and this one in particular is my favorite. I've been spoiled by Aaron Elkins' comfortable, fun style and I hope you will be, too.

Curses! Book Five in the Gideon Oliver Series Aaron Elkins 9781617561382 Books Reviews

What a great find! A whole series (pre-"Bones") about forensic anthropology in wonderful locations around the world. "Curses" is probably the weakest of the seven in the series I've read but they are all interesting.
A wonderful book as usual. Very typical of the series. I always look forward to re-reading books from this author.
I love all Aaron Elkins books. He writes exactly what I like to read. Anything about archaeology is a favorite with me. I hope he continues to release more books.
Curses is a very long story, that could be a bit shorter. But when you are a follower of the series you can over look the boring parts. Still the good old bone detective.
Very enjoyable read, especially for those who have visited the Yucatan and have an interest in Mayan ruins and history. The writer kept my interest with an in-depth knowledge of the area and history as well as the knowledge of the human skeleton. Kept me guessing all the way up to the end.
If you have ever had a series of books to which you return over and over again, then you understand how I feel about the Aaron Elkins' Gideon Oliver series. These novels are old standbys to which I return for intellectual stimulation and relaxation. The forensic science information as well as anthropological comments are certainly correct and well thought out. The mystery and who done it story twists and turns are well crafted so that you are almost always surprised the first time and they are fun to follow in subsequent readings. I recommend this whole series as a wonderful read -- over and over again.

Tom Ellzey, author "The Elephant's Heart".
I had already read several of the books in the Gideon Oliver series when I read "Curses!" which is set near the famous ruins of Chichenitza in Mexico. Having just returned from a trip to the Yucatan it was especially fun to see how skillfully Aaron Elkins weaves elements of the local area into the story along with his standard instructional bits on forensics. It's all good fun and keeps you guessing on whodunit right until the end. Take this book with you on a trip to Mexico!
